Show 649 - Do The Monkee

Air Date:

Tuesday, 09 September 2014

This weekend in the Underground Garage it’s Monkee time!

That’s right, we are celebrating the TV show that led to Monkee mania - mostly because we forgot to celebrate the 40th.

With us this week will be the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Sex Pistols, and the New York Dolls.

Find out what Rufus Thomas, Jack Nicholson, Johnny Rotten, and Bill Murray have in common.

It’s Monkee mania this weekend in the Underground Garage.

I love the Monkees!!!! I say bring the show back. The classic Batman series is on IFC why not the Monkees?

They show Monkee reruns on Sunday mornings on Aentenna TV (I think). I watch them every week. There's also a good documentary to seek out called "Making the Monkees". Very interesting inside stories on how this fun group we all loved came to be. It wasn't always pretty behind the scenes!!! LOL!! They went from a band manufactured in Hollywood to one of the most popular 4-somes in 60's music! We love you Monkees, oh, yes we do oo.... :)

Cool set 5 dedicated to "Head"... Haven't seen the movie yet, trying by all means to get a copy... However, I saw that one of the actresses of the movie passed away in april of last year and no one said anything in the garage... No, not Donna, not Nancy, not Ann-Margret, not Mamie... I'm talking about Annette... No, not Annette Haven... I'm talking about Annette Funicello (See show 131, Fun with Music Day) How come that went unnoticed in the garage ?

Love The Monkees! I *finally* got to see them - sans Davey, unfortunately - a month-or-so ago in Newark, NJ. Absolutely one of the best shows I've ever seen! They dug a lot of great stuff out of their catalog... songs that may not have even been featured in the tv show, as well as several numbers from "Head."

Greetins from West street Finland! Everybody check out Two by two, the most beautiful lovesong by Nils Lofgren (or anybody), which got the best acoustic guitar solo ever!

Great show. This one is putting a lump in my throat because my sister was a big fan of the Monkees and, sadly, she passed away a few years ago. Maryellen lived in England for a while in the '70's and met Davy Jones in London. They had dinner together and, needless to say, it was pure heaven for her and something she lived off of. The singles they produced were so good and it's great to hear them here. And just where did Steven come up with the Sex Pistols cover of "I'm not your Stepping Stone"?
