Show 625 - Pirate Radio

Air Date:

Monday, 24 March 2014

Hey baby, Little Steven here, and this weekend in the Underground Garage we are celebrating Pirate Radio, where is all started back there in old merry England with a crazy guy on a pirate ship.

Joining us will be Jeff Beck, the Hollies, the Searchers, and Johnny Burnett & the Rock n’ Roll Trio.

Come find out what Sonny Boy Williamson, Dusty Springfield, and Banana have in common.

I’ll see you this weekend in the world’s only Rock n’ Roll dance party on the radio.

That would be the Underground Garage.

No "pirate" radio for good old US of A. We had those super stations spreading their octopus waves around the land. In early 1970 I was driving in my Ford Galaxy 500 convertible, listening to "Stairway to Heaven." After the song's climatic ending, the DJ announced the weather. "30 degrees with flurries." I stared dumbfounded out my window into a clear sky of upper 40s temperature. Then the DJ announced the central standard time, in Chicago. I was Garden City Long Island EST.

Pretty much true but don't forget the 'border blasters' in Mexico, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_blaster .

I really like the Kelley Stoltz Are You My Love song (like Steed). I keep humming it at work....I know its new but it sounds hauntingly familiar.

    • Steed Colliss

It sounds "hauntingly familiar" because the bass and drums sound like the Batman theme at the beginning… Not that it takes anything away from the song...

Hi kids! Why did you stop posting the musical beds in here?

I Know Where The Sun Shines (Groovy Uncle with Suzi Chunk), Hi-Ho Silver Lining (Jeff Beck), Boom Boom (Animals), About The Weekend (Jellybricks) & The Train Kept A Rollin’ (The Rock n’ Roll Trio). 5 very cool ones. Thanks Stevie, Keep Oon Rockin.

Grew up listening to Radio Veronica, Dutch pirate radio, until they forced them off the air in the early seventies. What a cool show. Pirate radio truly rocked
