Show 533 - Bikini Beach Party 2012

Air Date:

Monday, 18 June 2012

Yea baby, it’s here…summertime!

It’s hotdogs, french fries, hot sand, groovy chicks, convertibles, and the Beach Boys, who invented it all.

Joining us as we kick off summer with our Bikini Beach Party will be Little Eva, Dick Dale, Jan & Dean, Jeff Beck, the Ronettes, the Kinks, and the Yardbirds.

Brand new music from Alejandro Escovedo, Dr. John, the Cocktail Slippers, the Chevelles out of Australia, and the Urges from Dublin.

It’s the first show of summer and the entire cast of Bikini Beach will be here.

I will see you on the beach at the world’s only Rock n’ Roll dance party on the sand.

Surf’s up!

It’s the Underground Garage.

WOW!! Ain't those some hot-looking young ladies on Bikini Beach-2012!! I'll try to get my comments-review in today, 6-28-12, or Friday, 6-29-12. Slight problem is that Thursday is the kick-0ff to the Gala Celebration of the Great River Bridge Opening in the Whip-City where I live, which is Westfield, Mass. Even the Governor of Massachusetts, Sir Deval Patrick of The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts is going to attend on Friday 6-29. The whole deal is the culmination of an $80 Million Dollar project signed back in December of 2003 for the Great River Bridges and Park project signed by the STIFF Mitt Romney that moved the bill into law. Hey, don't associate that joker Romney with me just because he's from Massachusetts. The City fathers want me to give a speech and dedication but I think that I'm going to stiff them and become a homeless-street person this weekend. Besides that, my publishers want me to finish my book about all the great bands that came out of Western Mass like NRBQ, Fat, Clean Living, Mitch Chakour, Ray Mason and The Lonesome Brothers, Joe Pernice and The Scud Mountain Boys, Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth, Frank Black and The Pixies, Jay Mascis and Dinosour,Jr., Lou Barlow and Sebadoh, Al Anderson and the Wildweeds, Chris Smither, Erin Mckeown, and some lesser known ones. And then there's that movie script that I need to wrap. All members of LSUG are invited to come to Westfield, Mass. and participate in the 4-day celebration, Thur, June 28 thru Sun., July 1st. I'll even find a place for you to sleep along the beautiful Westfield River. The weather is supposed to be in the 90's thru Monday, the 2nd of July and I don't have AC and live in an upstairs Apt., so I'll be sleeping Down By The River, myself, with about 20 homeless people who are a bit un-hinged but certainly not their fault. Oh Yeah! That's the OTHER book that I am writing about. The Homeless folk in Westfield who live Down By The River! But I guess that that will have to hold-for now. And then there's the 3 sold-out shows at Tanglewood on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of July!! I'll try to get my post in somewhere in between. I know that my fans are waiting with their tongues hanging out!! For now, I shall bid you Good Night!! Is that you, Ringo? Is This Me? Peace Be With You and Stevie told me to please don't forget your star ratings and significant comments!! PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Thank U Very Much!! Sincerely, EEEYAHHH!!! SMRZ!!!!

The sold-out shows at Tanglewood are for Mr. James Taylor!! Absolutely LOVE The Berkshires!! Sincerely, SMRZ!!

Thank U once again, Little Steven, for yet another 5 star SAT NIGHT!! As you said,"1st Day of the Summer Dance Party of the Rest Of Your Life." Yeah BABY-BIKINI BEACH-2012!! Most definitely, A STATE OF MIND!! Show # 533. Set 1. Bikini Beach(1964), sung by the feature stars of The 3rd Beach Party entry, which happens to be my fav. of the 5. The very rare appearance by the great surf band, The PYRAMIDS, alone is well worth the price oof admission. Ride The Wild Surf-Jan & Dean(64). That's the movie in which Malibu Surf Legend, Mickey Dora, doubled for Fabian on the Surfboard. Locomotion-Little Eva(62)., which was written by the genuis team of Goffin/King, who happened to be married at the time. Not bad for a 17 year old baby-sitter. Flower Punk-Genuis of Frank Zappa & his Mothers Of Invention,(1967). It was Zappa's answer to SGT. PEPPER. It even had very cool inserts-Zappa Style-Of course. WE used to open up that gatefold cover and roll joints over it as the seeds would roll down the Gatefold Cover. Man Of the World, which is Alejandro Escovedo's 11th solo release. I saw him at The Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. on Sat. June 9th. Excellent show. He even signed 9 of his cd's for me, even tho I didn't buy them at the show. A very nice Gentlemen. Secret Surfin' Spot, which was a rare Dick Dale vocal from Beach Party. Saw him at The Iron Horse back in Oct. and he can still SHRED, well into his 70's. His grandson played drums for him on that night. Oh Yeah-Zappa's LP from 67 was from We're ONLY IN It For The MoNEY. nice sound byte from Annette-"The Youth Of Today Leaves No Hope For Tomorrow" Now, more than ever, a very asstute observation!! Set 2. A very touching birthday tribute to the genuis of Mr, Brian Wilson, who turned 70 on June 20. Happy Birthday, Brian! Like you said, Stevie, Brian was able to keep his child-like sensibility immune from even Bob Dylan's negative cynicism that ruled at the time. Very cool story of how The Beach Boys took their food $ and recorded Surfin'. It' a good thing that at least Dennis knew how to surf. Rather ironic that he was the one who ended up drowning in 1983. A Terrible Loss. Don't Worry Baby, which was the flip side to I Get Around. Like you said, Stevie, there was no b-side on that single. Brian's music has remained purely spiritual,Universal, and Timeless. Hi Ho Silver Lining-Jeff Beck, who was in between The Yardbirds & The Jeff Beck Group. Your fave record of all time, Stevie! Very cool sound byte by Leo Gorcey. "WORK! I asked for ideas, not Sarcasm. Leo, you wouldn't let them put your mug on the greatest album of all time, unless YOU got paid? DUH? We're talking Sgt, Pepper here. And Yes, Indeed. It would not really be Summer without Freddy "BOOM-BOOM" Cannon and his Palisades Park, which hit #3 in 1962. Written by Chuck Barris, who went on to big success in the 70's with The Gong Show. He also supposedly worked for The CIA, although I have no proof on that one. Consider the Source! Significant to note that after Freddy Cannon's star had faded in the USA, he went on to bigger success across the pond in England. In fact, his LP, The Explosive Freddy Cannon became the 1st LP by an American artist to go to # 1 in The U.K.Way to Go, Freddy! Set 1 was all nicely sandwiched by Musical Beds Let's Go Trippin' by Dick Dale & Point Panic by The Surfaris. Very Cool Indeed! Set 3. Very cool story re: Brian Wilson meeting Elvis Presley in 1969. I'd leave the karate chops to The King, Brian. Duke Of Earl-Gene Chandler. No. 1 single way back in 1962, which sold over a Million within a month of it's Nov. 1961 release. Quite incredible, especially in view of the way that Doo Wop was starting to fade at this time in Rock history. Little Deuce Coup-Beach Boys-flip side of Surfer Girl. Tired Of Waiting For You by Mr. Ray Davies & The Kinks. Locked Down-Dr. John. Excellent new release with help from Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, who helped produce and provides excellent tasty guitar licks. Yeah Baby! The Night Tripper is back with his swampy Psychedelic Voodoo sound. Like Stevie says, Go out & buy the whole album. It is , indeed, Excellent! Do The Clam-Elvis. 1964 from Girl Happy. No, it never really caught on but Elvis appears in DRAG! Well worth a dvd rental, at least. Pleasant Valley Sunday-Monkees. Another Goffin-King treat. Set 4. Coolest song of the week. That's Why God Made The Radio. Great new stuff by The Beach Boys & produced by the genuis of Brian Wilson. Summer In the City-Lovin' Spoonful from the very HOT Summer of 1966 with a Jackhammer and stuff. Yes-We All miss Zal Yanovsky. I remember that Summer of 1966. It was extremely HOT! In fact, that is the Summer in which it was so hot that it changed World Music, Specifically, it was so hot in the dance clubs in Jamaica, that Ska Music with it's up-tempo beat evolved to Rock-Steady and then later to Reggae, as we know it today. Just compare the tempo of Ska to Reggae & you will get what I mean. Good Vibrations-Beach Boys-1966 again. I don't think that you could beat 1965-66 for mainstream hits on AM radio. Try to! You Can't! Finishing off with the great Gary U.S. Bonds with Dear Lady Twist aka (Get Up Upon Your Chair) from 1962. Gotta mention that great sound byte from Eric Von Zipper as played by Harvey Lembeck. He was the leader of the J.D. Motor-Sickle gang in the Beach Party Flicks. Set 5. Tribute to the BIKINI!! YEAH_BABY!!Talk about staying power. 1400 B.C. thank You for Brigitte Bardot, Brian Hyland, and the BEACH PARTY FLICKS!! Bikini Girls With Machine Guns-Cramps. Great vocals by the late Lux Interior born as Erick Lee Purkhiser on Oct. 21, 1946, in Akron, Ohio. The Cramps combined Rockabilly, Psychedelia, Sex, & B-Movie Sleaze into their thick Swampy Stew. Perfect for the Underground Garage! From their late LP Stay Sick! C'mon & Swim-Bobby Freeman from San Francisco back in 64. Psycho Daises-Yardbirds(1966), which was the flip to Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, the only single with Jeff Beck & Jimmy Page. Actually my fav 45 by them. I was lucky enough to see The Yardbirds last August in Springfield, Mass. at Bike Night in Stearn's Square. Quite a sight! Over 200 Bikes lined up & down the Street. Most of them Harley Davidsons. Talk abou a Nice Ride! Bike Night is Free during every Thursday Night in Downtown Springfield. The Yardbirds were actually very good that night & still tour. They still have the same rhythm section with Chris Dreja on Bass & Jim McCarty on drums, both original members. Finishing out with the Supremes and Dr. Goldfoot & the Bikini Machine(1965). Your favorite hit by them, Stevie. Gotta say a bit more about the Bikini. The Cramps Song was inspired by the 1973 film The Doll Squad, which was produced & directed by Ted V. Mikels. Ted also claimed that The Doll Squad was copied by Charlie's Angels. If you see any stills or pics from that film, you will see 4 chicks with Bikinis holding machine guns. REALLY! Check it out yourself. One of the girls is Tura Satana. who was also in Ted's Astro-Zombies from 1968 which is very PSYCHOTRONIC! I know Tara more from Russ Meyer's 1965 flick FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! Tura Satana is an awesome part-Apache, part-Japanese chick, who wears a tightjumpsuit as Varla, the dyke leader of the pack of 3 psychotic go-go dancers who race their Porsches in the California desert searching for cheap thrills. I've heard her say hello to you, Stevie, during a few of your shows. AGAIN-VERY PSYCHOTRONIC!! The Bostweeds provide thememorable theme song for FASTER! Now Stevie, here is where you & I differ re: chicks. You seem to favor the Bettie Page type while I go for the larger chicks like the ones from Russ Meyer movies, More specifically, I favor chicks like Erica Gavin(Vixen), Edy Williams who fill a bikini with her ample 39-23-37 form. I also like Dolly Read(Playboy's Miss May '66 and wife of Laugh In's Dick Martin. All appear in the 1970 Cult Masterpiece, Beyond The Valley Of the Dolls, which has nothing to do with the soapy Valley Of the Dolls. BVD, as cult enthusiasts refer to was the incredible story of The Carrie Nations, an all-girl rock group in a funny look at Hollywood decadence, the screenplay was written by both Meyer & Roger Ebert!! Can You Believe That? It is my fav all-time CULT Classic1 Well, Gotta Go for now. I'm meeting with the Governor Of the Commonwealth Of Massachusetts, the Honorable Devall Patrick, who is a good man who is trying to clean-up all of the dirty politics on Beacon Hill In Boston. Thanks once again, Stevie, for making my Sat. nights so much fun as well as educational. Signing Off for Now! Peace Be With You, L.S. & to ALL who live IN & FOR the Underground Garage!! EEYAHH!! SMRZ!!!

    • greggie434

"There R no B. sides in The Underground Garage", SMRZ, simply amazing.

    • greggie434

Rolling joints on an Album cover and watchin the seeds roll down to the middle of the album jacket, that takes me back to the days before MANDATORY DRUG TESTING!!!!!!!

  • ArthurAllen

I know Little Steven has a three and a half minute time limit on songs, but I've never heard it enforced so abruptly before. Great show, though! ;)

  • Ron Lynch

Man Of The World (Alejandro Escovedo), Hi Ho Silver Lining (Jeff Beck), Little Deuce Coupe (Beach Boys), Summer In The City (Lovin’ Spoonful) & Bikini Girls With Machine Guns (Cramps) Just 1 cool song from each set that are wicked cool.

Thanks Stevie great show man, liked it alot.

  • Chris Dougherty

Great show , Steven. The Beach boys' stuff is simply immortal. I really got into their work from the seventies.
