Show 488 - In Like Flint 2011

Air Date:

Monday, 08 August 2011

Hey baby, Little Steven here.

What is the campiest, kitschiest, coolest movie ever made?

I’ll let you think about that for a minute, but we are celebrating it this weekend in the Underground Garage.

Joining us will be the Hollies, the Standells, the Beatles, the Raspberries, and the Knickerbockers.

Cool new music from Make Out from New York City by way of Denmark, Master Plan from the Lower East Side, Stupidity out of Sweden, Red Button from L.A., Moonlight Towers from Austin Texas, Breakers from Copenhagen, Death By Unga Bunga from Norway, and Steve Cropper has a new record with Steve Winwood.

Come find out what Bob Dylan, Nancy Sinatra, and Sonny Boy Williamson have in common.

And come find out where Austin Powers actually came from.

We’re going to the movies this weekend in the world’s only Rock n’ Roll dance party on the radio.

I’ll see you this weekend in the Underground Garage.

Jim, I often record the show off of "live" stream from any of several radio stations using a nice little bit of "freeware" from Freecorder. It installs in your browser, itself, and can be used to record anything that "tickles your speakers" (works off of the soundcard in your computer). This can make *very* high quality MP.3s; I find that 128 kbps is more than good enough, though it will go to higher resolution.

Part B: Obviously, you are an Underground Garage member, so you can also play it out of the archive here and record it with Freecorder. If you need it converted to some other format, or just want to splice all the pieces back together, you can use the suite from Freemake (Freemake Video Converter), which is mainly intended for video processing but will also handle audio-only, to make one long file out of it. It will also convert to other formats, if you need it to, e.g. if you've recorded the show as MP.3, but need it in Apple's format (whatever the Hell it's called --- I don't use Apple stuff), FVC will fry it up and serve it on a nice toasty bun for ya :-)~. Hope this helps!

I know we're almost two years down the road, but there now is a podcast of the show on iTunes, from a mexican or spanish music website (rockfm.fm)

Help! I can't listen online anymore. Every time I click to listen to the show I get an error message saying "A tab has been recovered.A problem with the website caused explorer to close and reopen the tab".

I saw this movie when it came out and i think it was one of James best acting roles .The best comedy he made is Waterhole Number 3 a western and right after The Presidents Analyst. Many thanks Steven for spotlighting a great actor that exemplified all that was cool in the 60s.

  • RGMike

A great show, as always, but in re: the word "camp"... to quote "The Princess Bride", "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." All the movies you mentioned are wonderful but none of them are camp.

    • sdingeswho

RGMike, I know of two meanings for "camp", in the pop-culture sense. One, which is rare, today, is to be obviously and obnoxiously homosexual. The other is said of movies, theatre, etc., and means "a story, show, movie, etc. that 'takes itself *so* seriously' that it's *funny*", either intentionally or unintentionall. The "Our Man Flint" stuff qualifies under the latter definition, and, obviously, "Rocky Horror" (and Frank N. Furter in particular) was *both* LOL!
