Show 759 - Jailhouse Rock

Air Date:

Wednesday, 19 October 2016

Well winter is creeping in.

So what are you doing this weekend?

Drive in is out. Forget about the beach.

I know, let’s go to prison.

We’re celebrating Jailhouse Rock, Elvis Presley’s coolest movie.

Joining us will be the Tremeloes, the Fleshtones, the Sex Pistols, the Byrds, and the Dave Clark 5.

There is only one place to find out what Johnny Rotten, Wilson Pickett, and Serge Gainsbourg have in common.

We are calling it Jailhouse Rock, and it is exclusively, on this, the coolest radio station in town.

I will see you this weekend in the world’s only Rock n’ Roll dance party on the radio, in solitary, in the Underground Garage.

I'm late to the party here, making my way through the archived shows starting from the most recent and working my way backwards. I always loved Elvis and Jailhouse Rock is one of the few films he did that I can tolerate. One thing I noticed about it and always loved:

When Elvis' character first enters the prison, he has a meeting with the warden. The shot is set up with the actors and furniture set up a different way. The warden says something to the effect that if he behaves, his time there won't be so bad, etc., etc.

Later, when Elvis' character signs his recording contract in the record label executive's office, IT'S THE EXACT SAME SHOT as the prison warden's office. Same camera set up, desk and similar furniture and actors all positioned exactly the same. Always thought that was a cool, sly commentary.

P.S.: meant to write: "The shot is set up with the actors and furniture set up a CERTAIN way", not "a different way."

Mike, I'm doing this also, just the other way around.
