Show 582 - Decoration Day

Air Date:

Monday, 27 May 2013

Hey baby, Little Steven here.

This is a very, very, very exciting week.  It is the official end of winter as we come out of the Underground Garage and into the sunlight.

We are celebrating with some surf music this weekend.

We are celebrating the Rolling Stones coming to America.

We are celebrating James Bond.

Joining us will be the Beatles, the Stones, the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, the Impressions, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Johnny Rivers, and the Monkees.

Come find out what the Surf Bunnies, Little Walter, and the Monkees have in common.

It’s Decoration Day, a.k.a. Memorial Day, this weekend in the world’s only Rock n’ Roll dance party on the radio.

Let the summer-long party begin.

I’ll see you this weekend in the Underground Garage

Doesn't the riff of the Del-Lords' "When the Durgs Kick in" sounds a lot like the Goo Goo Dolls' "Another Second Time Around" (from the 1993 Superstar Carwash) ?

Let's see now! Surf tunes! Summer Tunes! Honoring our Veterans! Why It must be Decoration Day, which is now known as Memorial Day! Thank You Very Much, Little Steven, for another 5 Star Saturday Night Special which honored both our Veterans as well as all things Summer-like SURFING! O.K. Show # 582. Decoration Day! Memorial Day! Summertime! Nice background to open the show about Dick Dale and how he essentially invented Surf Music. As you said, Little Steven, "No Surf Music-No Surfing"! Set 1. Kicking off with The Beach Boys with I Get around, which hit #1 back in 1964. Followed by Mr. Dick Dale, himself, with Victor from 1963. Nice Tribute to Dick Dale who invented Surf Music! Mr. Joe Jones follows with his version of California Sun-Not You Talk Too Much. Mr. Gary "U.S." Bonds with School Is Out, from 1961. Jan & Dean give us (When Summer Comes)Gonna Hustle You. Hustle in a Good way, as you said, Little Steven. Nice sound byte by Robert Duvall with "Charlie Don't Surf". Also nice to hear Dick Dale, himself, declaring the Underground Garage as a very cool bitchin' place to be! Set 2. Nice background by you, Stevie, schoolin' us about the history of Memorial Day, and how it evolved from Decoration Day thanks to Mr. Henry Wells. Sonny Boy Williamson kicks off the music with Decoration Day. The Monkees contribute You Just May Be The One, which was somewhat underrated at the time. But Not Now! From New Hampshire, we get Comes & Goes by The Connection. Nice sound byte from Frankie Avalon and Annette from one of their Beach Movies. The Beatles declare that they have got Another Girl. Rod Stewart, who is rocking out again, closes the 2nd set with Finest Woman. You can almost hear The Faces backing him up. Great to hear Rod rocking out again. Set 3 kicks off with a nice musical bed with 2120 South Michigan Avenue. A very important address, as we all know! Nice intro to the set with the background of the adventures of The Rolling Stones and their early days in the USA. the Rolling Stones then kick off the set with Around and Around. Lorenzo Woodrose aka Baby Woodrose, gives us the Lysergic Rush of Bubblegum. B Side of their new single, from Copenhagen, Denmark, Light Up Your Mind. Yes! Lorenzo is still smoking to light up His Mind! Nice Stuff. Give Me A Hit, PLEASE! The Rolling Stones follow with Empty Heart. Little Walter goes Confessin' the Blues. Set 3 closes out with the very nice version of As Tears Go By as done by The Andrew Oldham Orchestra. Always brings a tear to My eye! Nice background vocals by Andrew. YES! Raise a Glass to honor our fallen comrades! Set 4. Coolest Song of the week by the Del-Lords with When the Drugs Kick In. Yeah Baby! Very Cool Tune! The Paul Butterfield Blues Band gives us Love Disease from their 1969 L.P. "Keep On Moving". A truly incredible vocal by Mr. Curtis Mayfield with The Impressions giving us Fool For You. Very Smooth Stuff! The Jaynettes close the 4th set with the very haunting Sally Go Round The Roses from way back in 1963. "Saddest thing in the whole wide world is to see your baby with another girl". Now how True Is That? Set 5. Our set from Jamaica! Nice musical bed with James Bond Theme by Monty Norman. Nice background about Ian Fleming who is responsible for the character of James Bond. Excellent opening theme of "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey from 1964. Johnny Rivers chips in with Secret Agent Man, keeping with The James Bond Theme of set 5. Wyldlife want The Right so I think that we should give it to them. The Surf Bunnies declare that Summertime Is Surfing time. Which It Certainly Is! The Beach Boys close out the last set and show #582 with Girls On the Beach. "No, I want you to die, Mr. Bond". Once again, I would like to Thank You, Little Steven, for another excellent Sat. Night. I also would like to Thank The Administrator for getting the show up into the Archives for all to enjoy! GOOD WORK! I also would like to commend you, Little Steven, for your fabulous new sponsor, The United Association. UAVIP! Providing much needed training and jobs for our Veterans in the Piping Industry! Especially significant in fitting with this week's show for MEMORIAL DAY! Well, I guess that's it for now! I guess that I'll see you next week when we may be celebrating the 46th Anniversary Of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band! For all who live IN and FOR The Underground Garage-Peace Be With You! EEYAHH! SMRZ!!
